History of the Murphy Bed

The original murphy bed was invented in 1900 by a man named William L. Murphy. Mr. Murphy lived in a one room apartment in San Francisco where he met his future wife. He had a standard bed taking up most of the floor space. Because he wanted to entertain, he started experimenting with a folding bed, and applied for his first murphy bed patent in 1900.

The first of Murphy's beds were manufactured in San Francisco. In 1918, William Murphy invented the pivot bed which pivoted on a door jamb of a dressing closet, and then lowered into a sleeping position - many are still in use today.

Murphybeds have come a long way since those early days. Modern technology has made it possible for less complicated and more efficient methods for counter balancing the weight of the bed.

Wallbeds utilize a patent pending gas piston lifting system that provides a smooth, quiet motion and cannot fail by breaking a spring.

This system has survived an intensive 10,000 cycle test with no negative effect on the performance of the Wallbed. This is equivalent to over 27 years of everyday use.

Wallbeds are suitable for most applications, from an occasional guest to everyday use. Many of our beds are being used in hospitals, fire stations, hotels, motels and resorts throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.
